Do I have to use my insurance company's contractor in New Jersey?

Carriers often recommend contractors from their own networks. That can be convenient, but in most cases the choice is yours.

The short answer

In New Jersey you can generally choose your own licensed contractor for an insurance repair. Your carrier may recommend one from its preferred network, and using them is fine if you are comfortable. Read your policy for any specific terms, and tell your adjuster who you have chosen.

Why carriers recommend contractors

Preferred networks let the carrier work with contractors who already know its pricing and paperwork. That can make things move quickly. It can also mean the contractor works mostly for the carrier, not for you.

What to look for in your own contractor

  • A New Jersey home improvement contractor registration number.
  • General liability and workers compensation insurance, with certificates.
  • Itemized estimates your adjuster can compare line by line.
  • Experience matching the finishes in your home, such as plaster, millwork, stone or hardwood.
  • One point of contact who answers your calls.

How the money usually works

Your carrier agrees on a scope and price with the documentation it receives. You pay your deductible. Payments are often made in stages, and if your mortgage company is named on the check, it may hold funds and release them as work is completed.
